Melbourne’s tap water is often lauded as some of the best in the country. However, when local roadworks started stirring up sediments and turning the water a yellow-brown colour, people started paying closer attention to exactly what was coming out of their taps.
As one family in the eastern suburbs discovered, contaminants and impurities don’t have to turn your water brown to be worth removing. Australian tap water often contains higher chlorine concentrations than a backyard swimming pool, and recent discoveries about the by-products produced by common treatment chemicals have experts concerned about potential carcinogen exposure and other health issues.
